All About Vitamin A

You may have heard from your grandma that eating carrots can improve you vision. That may not be exactly true, but carrots do contain something called provitamin A carotenoids. These are pigments in some plants that can be converted by the body into vitamin A, and vitamin A is important to your vision.

Vitamin A is also helpful to bone growth and your immune system. As with other vitamins, there are different forms of vitamin A. One of the forms that is most usable to the body is called retinol, which is found in liver, eggs, and milk. One of the most common provitamin A carotenoids that the body converts easily to retinol is beta carotene. Beta carotene is found in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables including carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and cantaloupe. Vitamin A is also one of the vitamins often used to fortify breakfast cereals.

Vitamin A is fat soluble, which means that the body stores it, mostly in the liver. That also means that it is possible to build up toxic levels of Vitamin A. This rarely happens from food sources because as the body builds up supplies of vitamin A it will slow down the conversion of beta carotene. When people do get vitamin A toxicity, it is usually from taking too much in supplemental or pill form. Toxic levels of vitamin A can cause liver problems, central nervous system problems, deterioration of bone density, and birth defects.

True deficiency of vitamin A is rare in theUS, but common in countries where malnourishment is widespread. As mentioned earlier, vitamin A is important to the immune system and vision. This is because the body uses vitamin A to make various internal tissues, such as those lining the eye, lungs, and intestinal tract. When these linings are weakened by vitamin A deficiency, it is easier for harmful bacteria to penetrate them and thus, people with vitamin A deficiency are more prone to infections, illness, blindness, and respiratory problems.

Aside from the malnourished, other people who may be prone to vitamin A deficiency include those who consume large amounts of alcohol and those with certain metabolic disorders that affect how fat and other nutrients are absorbed by the body.

Some recent and ongoing studies involving vitamin A and beta carotene include investigations as to whether high amounts of vitamin A contribute to osteoporosis, and whether beta carotene can lower the risk of some forms of cancer.

As of this writing the Recommended Daily Intake for Vitamin A was 2,310 IU for females and 3,000 IU for males. For a current list of recommendations and list of foods that contain Vitamin A from the National Institutes for Health visit http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamina/

Which Type of Yoga Is Right For You?

Yoga is becoming a more and more popular activity in the Western world today. The number of places holding Yoga classes of many different types is on the rise. With a choice of Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and many more it can be easy to get confused. This article will help you to understand the difference between the most popular types of Yoga so you can choose which type is right for you.

Hatha Yoga – In Sanskrit (an ancient classical language ofIndia) “Ha” means “sun” and “tha” means “moon”. This type of Yoga is a relatively slow paced, gentle type of Yoga and is a good place to start if you are completely new to Yoga and don’t know any of the asanas (poses).  Like all types of Yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to unite the mind, body and spirit.

Ashtanga Yoga – Ashtanga means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit. It’s a fast moving, intense style of Yoga based on a progressive sequence of asanas, synchronized with the breath. Ashtanga Yoga can be quite physically demanding as you are constantly move from one asana in the sequence to the next, so you’ll find that it will improve your stamina as well as your flexibility and strength..

Power Yoga – This is a western interpretation of Yoga and is based on Ashtanga Yoga. A Power Yoga class may not necessarily stick to the exact sequence of poses like Ashtanga Yoga does, but it does involve practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting.

Iyengar Yoga – This type of Yoga is based on teachings by B.K.S Igengar and concentrates on the correct alignment and form of the body.  Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, there is an emphasis on holding each pose for a long period of time rather than moving constantly from one pose to the next. Iyengar Yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to help align the body into the different poses.

Vinyasa Yoga – Vinyasa means breath-synchronized movement and is another fast paced type of Yoga, with an emphasis on breathing. A practice typically starts with sun salutations and moves on to more intense stretching. Throughout the practice each pose is balanced with a counter pose.

Bikram Yoga – Otherwise known as “Hot Yoga”, Bikram Yoga is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees, with a humidity of around 40%. Generally a sequence of 26 different poses is practiced during a Bikram Yoga class and the hot temperature helps to loosen muscles. Due to the high temperature most people sweat a lot during the class and this helps to cleanse the body of toxins.

If you’re just starting out or have never done any Yoga before, you may want to try a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best. Remember, there’s no rule that says you have to stick to one type of Yoga.

How To Pick Running Shoes

Running is wonderful cardiovascular exercise and a popular workout choice for men and women. Just as a carpenter requires the right tools for his trade, the right pair of running shoes is essential for both the casual and the serious runner. There are some things to consider when purchasing a running shoe.

How far and often will you be running? If you are a casual runner (less than ten miles per week), then a basic running shoe will be fine. If you are training for a marathon, consider making a true investment in your running shoes for optimal performance.

Consider the arch in your foot. Those with a high arch, need a running shoe with a curved shape. If you have an average arch, a semi-curved shoe might be the best fit. Those with a low arch or flat feet need a straight shape shoe.

Understand pronation, which is the rolling of the foot from heel to toe through the foot strike. A proper or neutral pronation is hitting the outside of the heel and up to ball of your foot evenly across the front. This is how your foot reduces the stress of impact. Underpronation means that the outside of your foot takes most of the shock instead of finishing in the neutral position. Overpronation is too much roll across from the outside to the inside of your foot.

To determine your level of pronation, look at the shoes you walk or run in. Most everyone will begin on the outside of the heel, the real indicator is the wear on the forefoot. If most of the shoe wear is:

  • On the medial (inside) side then you Overpronate
  • On the lateral (outside) side then you Underpronate
  • Uniform across the forefoot then you have a Neutral Stride

Where will you be running? Most people run on pavement or sidewalks, so most running shoes are designed with this in mind. However, if you are going to be running on uneven or softer surfaces (such as mountain trails or grass), look at shoes intended for those kinds of surfaces.

Shop for running shoes late in the afternoon, as feet are at their peak size at this time of day. When trying on the shoe, make sure there is a full thumb width between the end of the longest toe and the end of the shoe. In a properly fit running shoe, the toe box will allow the toes to move freely. The heel should not slip or rub against the shoe and the sole should flex with ease where the foot flexes.

Go to a store that specializes in running shoes or at least to a sporting goods store. The sales associates will be able to help you make a decision on the best shoe for you.

If you run often, consider purchasing more than one pair of running shoes. This way, you can rotate them. If you run often, your shoes should be replaced every six months or so.

Do consider price so your budget isn’t blown, but don’t sacrifice comfort and durability in the process.

Runners have a wide selection of styles, colors and levels of comfort from which to choose when looking at running shoes. Remember, whether you are a casual runner or a serious runner, comfort and excellent support are essential for the best performance!

Chiropractic Testimonial Video – Dr. Terry Schroeder – Head Coach US Men’s Olympic Water Polo Team

In this video, Dr. Terry Schroeder, head coach for the US Men’s Olympic Water Polo team and some of his athletes discuss the vital role that chiropractic plays in sport and life. Now the head coach of the team, Dr. Schroeder competed for the US in 4 Olympics himself. He also happens to be a chiropractor.

Elite athletes know that any small difference in preparation, fitness, function or flexibility can make the difference between a Gold and a Silver medal – or no medal at all. In the video, Dr. Schroeder shares how every member of the men’s team now includes chiropractic adjustments in their regime. Although some were reluctant at first, after seeing the results teammates were getting, they all eventually came around.  After all elite athletes are always looking for ‘an edge’.

In the sport of water polo, necks and shoulders take a constant beating from defenders. The shoulders in particular are prone to overuse injuries and hyper-extension. Shoulder injuries will sideline a player completely making it nearly impossible to train in the pool. As athletes of all level know, missing practice while recovering from an injury is vital time lost. Prevention and proactive care is the better route.

In the video you’ll hear Dr. Terry Schroeder’s personal story of how he was first introduced to chiropractic and also see him adjusting players on a portable adjusting table right on the pool deck.

We hope that be sharing examples of Olympic athletes using chiropractic care we can help spread the word among collegiate, high school and recreational athletes. Whatever your sport, we can help you achieve peak performance and prevent injuries.

An Adjustment In Your Golf Game

Chiropractic care is standard for many pro golfers and increasingly for many Senior Golfers as well. Professional golfer Lori West attributes the reason she’s playing today to chiropractic. Nearly two decades ago, she began visiting a chiropractor for pain in her shoulders and neck. According to West, the care has infinitely improved her golf game.

The problem is that the golf swing, in and of itself, isn’t conducive to having a healthy back. To have a good swing you create tension in your spine. (This enables you to get good distance). The tension comes from the hips stopping and the shoulders continuing to rotate. Basically, you make a coil. You’re uncoiling when you start your downswing. Since that’s an awkward movement for your back, many golfers end up with lower back problems.

Here’s some chiropractic advice.

• Before your game, do some basic stretches. Stretch out hamstrings and groin area.

• Put a club across your shoulders and lean left and right.

• Get in a position of where you would be in a swing and bend left and right.

• Grab a club behind your back and raise it up, stretching your shoulder muscles.

• Grab the club backwards – so if you normally swing right-handed, you’d grab it like you’d be swinging left-handed- and take 10 practice swings that way. You’re stretching different muscles and it will help you loosen up considerably.

• Do neck stretches. Stiff neck muscles inhibit the rest of the body from turning freely.

Anything that helps your flexibility eventually helps with your game. As you get older, your swing naturally shortens since the muscles aren’t as supple. During the winter, work on stretching the muscles of the arms, shoulders and back. Flexibility is very important for older golfers.

Also, you have to have good balance if you want to hit the golf ball consistently. A healthy spine is paramount to proper balance and posture. Improve your balance and you’ll improve your consistency. In needed, orthotic stabilizers for your shoes can help improve balance so your swing is better.

Chiropractors care for your body as a whole, not just the back. So if your golf game is feeling out of sync, chiropractic may be just the very adjustment that your body and game needs!

5 Easy Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

Metabolism refers to the rate at which your body burns calories. Your metabolic rate is your personal “calories-per-hour” number. Your metabolism is lowest while you sleep and highest during and right after vigorous exercise. Here are a few tips for raising your metabolism:

1. Don’t skip breakfast

The morning meal jump starts your metabolism and helps to prevent bingeing later in the day.  A cup of coffee does not count – the caffeine and added sugar may give you a bit of energy and suppress your appetite for a little while, but generally backfires causing severe hunger and overeating later in the day.  Breakfast should include complex carbohydrates like whole grain (granola or oatmeal), along with some protein and fat (low-fat yogurt or milk) to keep your energy levels even and hunger in check.

2. Eat more often

Get into the habit of eating every three to four hours or at least four times a day.  Eating frequently stabilizes blood sugar. When blood sugar drops too low you want to eat…a lot.  By keeping your blood sugar stable you can control your appetite and keep you metabolic rate high.  When you go many hours without eating your body will compensate by slowing down your metabolism to conserve energy.

3. Eat protein at every meal

Protein takes more energy and time to digest, and will leave you feeling full longer than eating carbohydrates alone.  Research shows that eating more protein can help you lose weight without cutting calories.  Try these protein possibilities: turkey on whole wheat; hummus and pita; vegetarian chili; fruit and nuts; or protein snack bars that contain 12 or more grams of protein.

4. Hold off on snacking

Many of us grab a snack for quick energy when we are feeling tired,  but do not confuse true hunger with fatigue.  If you are feeling tired go for a 15-20 minute brisk walk.  This will raise your heart rate and give you a boost of energy.  Follow it up with a large glass of cool water.  If you are truly hungry have a protein- and complex carbohydrate-rich snack like whole wheat crackers and peanut butter or cheese.

5. Consume enough for your body’s needs

Eating too little slows your body’s metabolism the same way eating too infrequently does.  If you want to lose weight, do not slash your calories too drastically.  Instead, cut out some of the extras in your diet – things like soda, juice, packaged goods or candy.  Processed foods tend to be high in fat and calories and low in vitamins, minerals and fiber.

In conclusion it is important to understand that your metabolic rate is controlled by many factors. You can exert a fair amount of control over many of these factors. This article has emphasized how your diet affects your metabolism, but clearly movement is the other major factor.

Back to School: How Much Sleep Do Kids Need?

Are your kids ready for school? You have bought the clothes, supplies and stocked the pantry. But, what about what happens the night before? Sleep is just as integral to a great day as the other items listed above.

The Importance of Sleep

Many people think of sleep as an interruption in their day. However, sleep is actually much more important than that. Here are some facts about sleep.

During sleep the body repairs itself. Each day’s activities place wear and tear on the body, whether we know it or not. You don’t have to show bumps and bruises to affect changes inside the body.

At night, the body shuts down all non-vital systems so it can get to work. Damage to cells and organs are attended to during the sleep cycle. Different brain chemicals are secreted to ensure that you get to sleep and stay that way.

The average person needs about eight hours of sleep each night. For children, teens and older people this number can vary depending on age, but most aren’t even getting the minimum requirement.

Without enough sleep, the body begins to show visible signs of wear. Your brain can’t focus and concentration at work and at school becomes an issue.

The immune system can become compromised. Lack of proper time to repair can lead to increased illness and stress-related problems.

With all of that said, how much sleep does your child need?

Preschoolers

Preschool age children are attending an educational setting at least half a day. With the increased activity, they may need longer periods of rest. In this age group, 10 to 12 hours a night is recommended. Since this is almost half the day, they may not need to take a nap in the middle of the day.

Young School-Age Children

Attending school for a full day can be a shock to their system. Your child may come home tired and sleepy after their first few full days of class. At this age, children require about the same amount of sleep as when they were preschoolers.

A nap time is built into many school schedules. You can compensate by lowering their nightly sleep regimen by an hour or so. The nap can leave them ready for activity when they come home. This period of time is important as it lets them wind down from school before bedtime.

Teens

Teenagers still need at least eight to nine hours of sleep a night. Often, activities keep them from achieving this on a regular basis, but it is a must. Trying to catch up on sleep on the weekend never works and can leave a permanent deficit that affects their waking activities.

For all school-age children, set a regular bedtime and try to stick to it. This will ensure that enough sleep is received to promote health, concentration and a positive mood.

Skin Cancer Alert

Staying safe during the summer is more than drinking water. Skin cancers are just as deadly as other cancerous condition and are usually directly affected by the sun. If you are spending time in the sun with the family, learn to protect your skin.

The skin is actually the largest organ in the body. It can develop cancerous lesions just like the other systems of your body. Many people don’t think about skin cancer as being serious or as being a problem, especially if they don’t know what to look for.

But, there are always ways to protect yourself from it. Here are some tips to increase your fun and lower your cancer risk this year.

  • Wear sunscreen – The difference between sunscreen and sun block is that the sunscreen will only allow a small amount of radiation to enter the skin from the sun. Sun block doesn’t allow any radiation to come through. You can still get bronzed without the danger of UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and can do more extensive damage. Try SPF 45 or higher.
  • Wear hats – Be sure it has a wide brim. Since most people avoid the eye area or the face altogether when applying sunscreen, a hat can protect the delicate skin on your face from aging and wrinkling.
  • Drink lots of water – Water keeps skin supple and hydrated during the summer. Healthier skin is better able to handle exposure to the sun.
  • Use waterproof sunscreen at the beach – Kids love to frolic and play in the water, but all sunscreens are not compatible. Use a waterproof brand and apply all over the body. Reapply every two hours for the duration of the time you spend in the water.
  • Wear sunglasses – They further protect the skin on your face and your eyes. Look for specs that have lenses treated for UVA and UVB radiation.
  • Wear lightweight light-colored clothing – Even walking around in the sun when you are not on the beach can lead to skin damage for exposed areas. Wearing long sleeve blouses or shirts and pants made of light material can keep you cool while also protecting you from harmful rays.
  • Use make-up that performs double duty – Most beauty products these days contains some level of SPF. If you wear foundation, lipstick, lip gloss and other make-up, look for products with added SPF for extra protection.
  • Wear sun block when appropriate – When hanging out in sunny places, sun block can keep all rays from penetrating the skin. This is good for small children, babies, and the elderly.

Do you like to spend time outdoors when the weather gets warm? The sun is beautiful but it can also be harmful to your skin. As skin cancer becomes more and more of a concern, you can lower your risk with these helpful tips.

Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Anxiety

We all have some sort of anxiety in our lives. Daily events make this normal. But some think longer and harder about certain conditions and it affects their quality of life.

Chronic anxiety is a part of a series of conditions called generalized anxiety disorders (GAD). They include panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, phobias and social anxiety disorders. Where others may feel overwhelmed in a situation and then recover, those who experience chronic anxiety always find themselves back in this situation no matter what they do.

Chronic anxiety is a condition that may begin as normal worry. A situation in your life may cause you to begin fretting about the present or the future. Over time, these thoughts consume you and dictate your actions. What one person may push aside and forget about, you continue to lament about.

Anxiety is not uncommon. A person who changes their life in answer to increased anxious thoughts may be experiencing a more severe problem. If you have been experiencing any of the following symptoms for at least six months, see your doctor. They can suggest a course of treatment which may involve seeing a psychologist. Official diagnosis of chronic anxiety requires at least six months of unrelenting symptoms.

Signs of Chronic Anxiety

  • Digestive issues – When we are upset or nervous about a situation, we get butterflies in our stomach. This can happen before a public speech. What is not normal is when the issues are more progressive and don’t go away after the event has passed. It can include heartburn, cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Chest pain – Often associated with heart attacks and angina, chest pains may arise when you think of a certain situation in your life. It can also bring on heart palpitations or shortness of breath.
  • Irritability – Anxiety can lead to a state of restlessness in your life. The constant thoughts that you can’t get away from can make you impatient with yourself, especially if you desperately want to change.
  • Insomnia – Sleeplessness is a sign of worry. The mind takes time to calm down at night. It is harder to complete this process and get to sleep when you are filled with anxious thoughts.
  • Confusion – Some people view anxiety as being in a fog. The perceptions and thoughts alter how you see your life. You are also easily distracted by new thoughts that lead to anxious feelings. You may feel like you are losing your mind because you can’t control your thoughts or your response to them.

Those who experience anxiety disorders don’t have to live in fear or shame. There is treatment out there that can reduce or totally relieve the symptoms by getting at the underlying condition.

The Role of Antioxidants in Good Health

Everyone has heard about the importance of a balanced diet for maintaining good health. Similarly, everyone knows that they should be getting exercise – or at the very least adding more activity into their days. Getting a good night’s sleep is essential – without it, you’ll find that your immune system starts to slack off a bit and you put yourself at a greater risk for catching a cold or coming down with the flu.

We all know what we should be doing, but let’s be honest: very few of us eat a balanced diet all of the time. Many of us make the choice to take the elevator rather than the stairs and we try to find a parking place that’s as close as possible to our destination rather than taking the opportunity to walk a little further. We also tend to let stress, work, social gatherings and more interfere with the amount of sleep that we’re able to get each night.

When we don’t go the extra mile to take care of ourselves, and when our immune systems start to falter because of it, we may not feel it right away. Soon, sluggishness starts creeping in. This sluggishness not only slows us down, it also ages us prematurely. Fortunately, there’s something that we can do to counteract some of these effects. We can maintain our vigor and reduce the risk of disease simply by adding antioxidants to our diet.

What are antioxidants? The simplest answer is that antioxidants are plant-derived compounds that help prevent and repair cellular damage. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, selenium, lycopene and resveratrol are all examples of antioxidants that are found in fruits and vegetables. By making an effort to add antioxidants to our diet, we can slow the cellular damage that leads to disease.
Antioxidants are, in effect, sponges that soak up the free radicals in our systems. Excess free radicals are generated by the less healthy foods that we eat, alcohol that we drink, smoke that we’re exposed, and stress that we endure.

Free radicals damage our DNA and other cellular structures at the molecular level. Antioxidants roam around the body inactivating the free radicals and also assisting in damage repair. Damage that isn’t repaired can cause a cell to die, malfunction or replicate uncontrollably (such as in a tumor).

You can fight back against free radicals by adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet.

Avoiding Dehydration

Water is an important element in our lives. Without it, the body can’t function properly. When the weather gets warm, excessive loss of water can lead to dehydration.

What is Dehydration?

Dehydration refers to loss of water that affects the body. In hot weather or at any time, the body uses just as much water as it takes in. That is why water intake is so critical to your daily diet.

How does the body lose water? Metabolic processes like cellular repair and cellular respiration require water. Each cell bathes in it. Excretion of bodily waste products through urination causes a loss of water as well. But, the quickest way that we lose water from the body is through perspiration or sweat.

When you are out in the hot weather, the body sweats to cool itself off. Water escapes the body through the skin. Here it evaporates cooling the tissues below. It may not feel like you are cooling off when water is dripping from your body, but have someone blow across your skin. Feel it now?

Most of the time when you are thirsty, you are already feeling the effects of dehydration. Some of the symptoms are:

  • Light-headedness
  • Dark urine
  • Loss of appetite
  • Heat intolerance
  • Dry cough
  • Fatigue

Nutritionists recommend that we drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Some doctors have upped that limit to ten or more depending on your activity level and/or body weight.

Avoiding Dehydration

The best way to deal with dehydration is to avoid it in the first place. With a few tips you can ensure that you are always adequately hydrated, whether out in the heat or inside out of the elements.

  • Drink water throughout the day – Drinking a bolus of water during heavy activity doesn’t account for any deficiencies you already had during the day. Once you start to sweat you could create a deficit rather quickly. If you are trying to drink at least eight glasses a day, drink one glass about every two hours for even hydration.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing during physical activity – In the heat, dark clothing can attract more heat. Light, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics can minimize water loss through sweat. It can also pull moisture away from your body so you stay cooler.
  • Avoid soft drinks and alcohol – These types of beverages only increase thirst. Instead of water loss being replaced with water, it is replaced with substances that the body needs to excrete. In fact, more water is pulled from your system to dilute them. They may taste good but they are not helping your body at that moment. Save the beer or cold soda for relaxation time later on.

Dehydration is a serious matter. Whether it is hot or you are exercising a lot, replace that lost water with more water on a consistent basis to stay healthy.

Sports Drinks vs Water

Sports drinks and energy drinks have become a popular substitute for water.  They are sold in almost every grocery store, department store and pharmacy.  Sports drinks are advertised in most sports magazines and all sports television.

But what about the controversy of sports drinks vs water?  Which is better?

Gatorade is one of the most universally known sports drinks and is available in different colors and flavors that will satisfy most taste buds.  There are other sports drinks that are on the market that have differing amounts of electrolytes and additives.  All reportedly improve athletic performance.

In 1965 a group of specialists from the University of Florida began pioneering sports drinks to encourage their athletes to fight tired muscles without performance-enhancing drugs.  What they found is that athletes who used the sports drinks became dependent upon them.  Research found that after having used energy drinks 90 percent of athletes then preferred them to water after a tiring activity.

The original intent of sports drinks was to be used during an activity to help the athlete continue and not to refuel after an activity.  Post athletic activity refueling is important and can be accomplished successfully without the addition of the empty calories found in sports drinks.  In fact drinking them without exercising intensely will lead to quick weight gain, often the opposite effect that a client is trying to achieve.

But sports drinks vs water?  Sports drinks are not an alternative to water, which is the major component of the body.  They are stimulants, which help the athlete to continue to work, but they will never replace re-hydration with water.  In fact, using a sports drink after an activity without also using water will lead to dehydration.

Most sports drinks contain carbohydrates to fuel muscles and supplements to replenish fluids and nutrients.  There are three types of drinks.  Isotonic that sustains energy for middle and long distance events; hypotonic that are best for jockeys and gymnasts; and hypertonic for ultra distance events and used with isotonic drinks.

The difference in each of these sports drinks is the amount of carbohydrates and electrolytes.  The higher the level of these additives the slower they empty from your stomach and the longer you feel full.

So which is better: sports drinks vs water?

The answer lies in the amount of time you’ll be exercising, your drink preferences, and your pre-exercise hydration level.

Water hydrates best for people who are exercising between 25 and 45 minutes.  Only the true endurance athletes really need sports drinks to replace their sodium loss from sweat.  If you are exercising for 30 minutes you won’t need to hydrate during the workout.  If you are going for 45 minutes water will hydrate you and maintain your performance.

Only you can answer this question best for your situation.  You know your program.  Use the drink that will help you perform the best.
